Sweet Table

I'm so excited to share this with you guys. This is my first sweet table and man was it time consuming! I made everything on this table. From the butter tarts, to the sugar cookies and made my first cake which I blogged about here. I made this sweet table for my Dad's 60th birthday surprise party. I based the party on a 1950's diner theme using teal, tiffany blue, light blue and cream as the colour template.

I created sugar cookies in a six and a zero (60), butter tars (for you who don't know what they are it's a Canadian thing!), chocolate covered chips (which made some people go crazy), chocolate milkshake cupcakes, coconut and cherry marshmallows (these were purchased) and a teal ombre cake.

I made the tissue garland out of a lot of tissue paper, it's super easy to make. I also made the cupcake crowns and cupcake toppers with my cricut. All of the signage, invites and photographs were taken my Marc at mkphotographics. He did such a wonderful job!

We held the party at a country club just north of Toronto and about fifty people showed up. It was a total surprise for my Dad which made all the hard work worth it.

Hope you like the pictures and all of the hard work on my first sweet table. I can't wait for the next one I create.

Halloween Favourites

Fall is my favourite time of the year. Cooler weather, leaves changing colour and seasonal flavours like apple, pumpkin and candy. Yes I said candy, this is the one time of year (Halloween and the weeks leading up to it) when I have no guilt eating lots and lots of candy.

Here is a little round-up of past Halloween and Fall cupcakes that Cupcakes and Sundry has made over the years.

When I first started decorating...not too good

Loved these, spider cupcakes

Pumpkin cupcakes with a candy corn
shortbread cookie
More cupcakes to come this season. Last season I was lazy and didn't bake anything. This year I'm going to use my cricut cake and make some Thanksgiving and Halloween cakes and cupcakes.

Favourite Summer Time Cupcakes

My favourite summer time cupcakes are angel food cake with fresh strawberry icing. Every year my cousin asks me to make them for her birthday. All you need is your favourite angel food cake recipe and an easy strawberry icing recipe

1/2 cup butter
2 cups icing sugar
1/2 cup strawberry puree (I make sure to drain it as best I can or else the icing is too runny no matter how much sugar you put in).

These cupcakes melt in your mouth, you barely feel like you've ate anything. They just might be my favourite!

Peanut Butter and Jam Cupcakes

So I ran out of blogging material and it's been awhile since my last blog so I thought I'd make some cupcakes.  Of course it's 35 degrees outside and ridiculously humid outside but my curly hair can take it. I also got these cute Peanuts cupcake liners that I just had to use.

I made a vanilla or butter cake, cupcake and filled it with strawberry jam topped with peanut butter frosting AND strawberry frosting but unfortunately by the time I came around to making the strawberry one my butter was way too soft and I ended up with a really runny frosting.  I didn't have enough time to firm it up so it looks really funny in the pictures.

This recipe is now my new stand-by cupcake recipe, it looks kinda funny after it's made if you don't get the butter really soft but it still tastes great!

Yellow Butter Cupcakes (makes 18)

2 eggs
2/3 cup sour cream (full fat)
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 cups cake flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. baking soda, baking powder and salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter

Mix all of the dry ingredients in a bowl (this will be your main bowl), in another bowl mix eggs, vanilla and 3 Tbsp. of the sour cream.  Add the butter and sour cream to the dry ingredients, mix in.  Slowly add the egg mixture, blend for a couple of seconds and you are ready to put the batter into the cupcake tin. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.  Cool in tins for 10 mins.

Peanut Butter Frosting

1/4 cup butter
3/4 cup peanut butter
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Mix all together until you get a desired consistency.

Jam Frosting

1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup jam
2 cups powdered sugar
1 T. milk (if needed)

Mix all together until you get a desired consistency.

Assemble all together and om nom nom!

How to videos

About a year ago I went to a studio and did three instructional "how to" videos.  The first, me making one bowl chocolate cupcakes, the second making marshmallow icing and third, me frosting the cupcakes.

I had a great time but they were my first videos so they are quite awkward and I'm very stiff.  I hope you have a laugh!

Cupcake Fimo charms

One thing I like to do in my spare time (which I don't have much of lately) is making fimo cupcakes, fruit and other things.  I just wanted to share some of my creations with you.  They look so yummy, and I love to wear the stuff it always gets a great reaction.

Cupcake Kitchen Photo Shoot

I always get my "professional" pictures taken by the same person. I love the photographer's sense of style and artistic direction.  Today I had a photo shoot with my photographer Marc aka mk:photographics, instead of doing our regular photos of cupcakes (that I usually make) we used me as the main focal point of the photos.

In the end, I love the photos! They turned out exactly how I wanted them to.  Love the colours and how the three pictures tell a story.  My only issue is that I can't decide which one is my favourite.  What do you think?
